The White House and Australia opened up the possibility of drone system collaboration with Japan last week, exploring how a shared network of unmanned aircraft could strengthen the mutual defense of the Indo-Pacific region. The White House announced that such a cooperation could also “accelerate technology transfer in the rapidly emerging field of collaborative combat aircraft and autonomy.”
The White House shared this brief announcement halfway through an extensive joint statement released by President Joe Biden and Australian Prime Minister Albanese. The proposed drone system would be built on a new agreement signed by Australia and Japan that commits to joint military exercises and defense integration between the two countries, an agreement that the White House said they “applaud.”
